BMW 316i, 320i and 328i pre-facelift (N13 and N20 engines)

The BMW 316i, 320i, and 328i produced before the facelift were equipped with the N13 (1.6 turbo) and N20 (2.0 turbo) engines, two direct-injection units developed to offer a good balance between performance and fuel economy. The N13 engine is a more compact version, also used in some Mini Cooper models (N14/N18), while the N20 powers more powerful models in the BMW range.
On the 316i , the engine is just a restricted version of the 320i: a simple Stage 1 reprogramming makes it easy to reach more than 200 horsepower , offering an excellent performance/price ratio.

Reliability and known problems

Although powerful and enjoyable to drive, the BMW N13 and N20 engines are known for several mechanical weaknesses:

- Fragile supply chain
These engines present a risk of timing chain stretching, along with the possible breakage of the plastic guides. A rattling noise when cold or at idle is often the first warning sign of a problem requiring prompt attention.

- Turbo leaks and problems
The intake hoses and turbo vacuum lines can crack over time, leading to power loss or engine misfires . Regular visual inspection of the intake system is recommended.

- Excessive oil consumption
One of the most common weaknesses, sometimes observed even before 100,000 to 150,000 km .
The main causes include:

    • Faulty PCV valve : often the easiest source to correct, via replacement of the diaphragm or the entire valve cover.

    • Worn valve stem seals : cause blue smoke from the exhaust, especially after an idling phase.

    • Rocker cover leak : check by removing the engine cover and inspecting the upper areas of the block.

    • In extreme cases, wear of the piston rings or cylinders , requiring a complete engine overhaul .

- Coolant leaks
Often located at the rear of the engine, they can easily go unnoticed. Regular inspection of the coolant level and condition is therefore essential to prevent overheating.

318i and 320i after facelift (3-cylinder B38 engine)

The B38 engine is significantly more reliable than the previous model. Although a few incidents of premature timing chain wear or thermostat replacement have been reported, these problems are rare and not considered recurring.

328i after facelift (4-cylinder B48 engine)

The B48 engine represents a significant improvement in reliability compared to its predecessor, the N20. Engineers have successfully resolved the timing chain issues that plagued the previous model.

As a result, the B48 offers more stable and durable performance, reducing the risk of mechanical failures. The improvements made to this engine allow owners to enjoy a more reliable and worry-free driving experience, a significant advantage over previous models.

Coolant leaks from two places are sometimes mentioned in connection with this product:

  • Coolant leak from the upper engine hose

  • Leak from the oil filter housing

335i (6-cylinder N55 engine)

The BMW 335i with the N55 engine is generally considered reliable.

However, the intake system can become clogged if the vehicle is driven too slowly. Furthermore, as is the case with many BMW gasoline engines, oil leaks can occur at the valve cover, oil filter housing, and lower crankcase.

340i and m340i (6-cylinder B58 engine)

The 440i , often nicknamed the " German 2JZ " because of its ability to significantly increase its power with minimal modifications (a simple reprogramming can easily reach 400 horsepower), is probably the most reliable model among the 4 Series petrol models , and the one we recommend, both for its reliability and driving pleasure.

Although these cases are rare, it is possible that the B58 engine may suffer from fouling if the vehicle is used too moderately.

BMW 316d, 318d, 320d and 325d pre-facelift (N47 engine)

The BMW 316d, 318d, 320d, and 325d models produced before the facelift are powered by the N47 four-cylinder diesel engine , an engine that has undergone significant development since its introduction. Known initially for its timing chain issues , the N47 has been a source of considerable concern for BMW owners.

Fortunately, BMW addressed the issue starting in 2011 , introducing several technical improvements designed to increase the reliability of this engine. The guides, tensioners, and the design of the timing system were revised, which significantly reduced the risk of chain breakage or stretching .
Between 2013 and 2015 , the engine was further improved, to the point that models produced from 2015 onwards are no longer affected by these chronic problems.

In summary, the latest versions of the N47 offer an excellent compromise between fuel efficiency and reliability , while remaining enjoyable to drive thanks to their readily available torque from low revs. However, when buying a used car, it's always wise to check maintenance records and pay attention to any unusual noises when the engine is cold , especially on models prior to 2013.

BMW 316d, 318d and 320d after facelift (B47 engine)

After the facelift, the diesel range adopted the B47 engine , successor to the N47. This 2.0-liter 4-cylinder diesel is unanimously recognized as one of BMW's most reliable and economical engines at that time.
It offers very low power consumption and good flexibility for everyday use. While it may be slightly more vibratory than some newer units, it has not presented any major recurring defects reported to date.

The B47 benefits from a redesigned timing chain , now positioned at the front of the engine (rather than at the rear as on the N47), which greatly simplifies maintenance and reduces costs should any repairs be required. In practice, it's an excellent choice for mixed or highway driving , with a lifespan exceeding 300,000 km provided it's regularly maintained.

BMW 330d and 335d (6-cylinder N57 engine)

The BMW 330d and 335d F30 represent the top of the diesel range in the 3 Series. Their 3.0-liter N57 inline six-cylinder engine is smooth, powerful, and durable . This engine, already found in numerous BMW models, enjoys an excellent reputation for reliability , provided it is meticulously maintained.

The N57 engine is robust, but remains susceptible to timing chain issues , like most BMW engines of this generation. However, the risks are lower than with the N47. On models with over 150,000 km , it is advisable to listen for any metallic rattling noise when the engine is cold, a potential sign of timing chain wear.

Apart from this point, the engine is distinguished by its good turbocharger durability and excellent compatibility with ZF's 8-speed automatic transmissions , renowned for their smoothness and longevity. Preventive transmission fluid changes between 60,000 and 100,000 km are recommended to extend its lifespan.

In short, the 330d and 335d F30 are among the best diesel options in the range: powerful, reliable, and durable. They are perfectly suited to those looking for a sporty, high-performance, and economical sedan in the long run , provided you check the vehicle's complete history before buying.

In conclusion, which models should be avoided and which should be preferred?

Models to avoid: BMW 316i, 320i and 328i from 2011 to 2015 (phase 1)

Preferred models:

  • BMW 328i from 2015 onwards (phase 2),

  • BMW 318d, 320d, 325d, 330d, 335d phase 1 and phase 2

  • BMW 335i and 340i

For each model, we recommend not relying solely on the "long-term" service intervals provided by BMW, but rather changing the oil every 10,000 km for petrol engines and 15,000 km for diesel variants . This will minimize wear on the timing chain and variable valve timing system. Also, be sure to use the oil viscosity recommended by BMW to maximize the lifespan of your engine.

When considering a new purchase, prioritize a model with a clear history .

Regarding the sportier 335i and 340i models, these are more prone to abuse by their previous owners than to inherent reliability issues. Inspect the tire wear: look for signs of overheating, worn front tires on the sides (indicating fast cornering), heavily worn rear tires (skids), blue brake discs (heavy braking), and check the seller's claims (respecting turbo warm-up and cool-down times).
