21 Tips to Save Fuel This Back-to-School

21 Conseils pour économiser du carburant cette rentrée

1. Drive less : Streamline your car use. Do you really need to use your vehicle for a trip of less than 2 or 3 kilometers? Cycling is a good alternative for short journeys.

2. Slow down and drive smoothly . Driving fast increases aerodynamic and road resistance, which increases fuel consumption. Avoid sudden changes in speed.
3. Buy gas early or late in the day : Gasoline is cooler and denser at the beginning of the day. As the temperature rises, the density of the gasoline decreases, and you get less when you fill up. The difference will be very small, but every penny counts!
4. Warm up your car for shorter periods . Avoid parking with the engine running; modern vehicles do not need to idle for 5 minutes as was the case in the past: idling your car for more than a minute wastes fuel and emits large quantities of greenhouse gases.
5. Turn off the engine . Turn off your vehicle's engine when you are stopped for more than 30 seconds; an engine idling for an excessive period is a significant waste of fuel.
6. Control when and how you brake . Excessive braking can waste fuel, as you'll have to accelerate again afterward. Generally speaking, keep in mind that all braking requires re-acceleration. Therefore, maintain a safe distance from the vehicles in front of you and anticipate their movements well in advance. Approaching a roundabout? Start decelerating 150 meters before the roundabout, and do the same for a stop sign or yield sign.
7. Avoid gas stations located near the highway. Many of you already know this, but it's still worth remembering that gas stations located near the highway are generally the most expensive.
8. Avoid using the air conditioning . Air conditioning requires your engine to run, putting extra strain on it. Excessive use of the air conditioning can increase your car's fuel consumption.
9. Don't wait until your tank is almost empty to fill up . You'll be forced to buy gas at the nearest gas station.
10. Monitor your tire pressure . A major factor in increased fuel consumption, underinflated tires tend to wear out faster and waste gas because they create more rolling resistance. Refer to the tire pressures recommended by your vehicle's manufacturer, usually found on the driver's side door or inside the fuel filler flap.
11. Eliminate factors that increase wind resistance . Remove unnecessary car carriers and supports when not needed.
12. Change the filters . Clean filters allow cars to run more efficiently. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for changing your diesel or gasoline filter. Similarly, a clogged air filter can lead to increased fuel consumption, in addition to damaging your engine.
13. Use the correct engine oil . Using the wrong engine oil (more viscous than the manufacturer specifies for your vehicle) can make the engine work harder and waste fuel.
14. Select Eco mode on your car if it is equipped with it. This mode is designed to reduce your fuel consumption. Similarly, if your vehicle has an automatic transmission, use it in Eco or Normal mode and reserve Sport mode for mountain roads.
15. Ensure your engine is properly tuned . For older vehicles, a properly tuned engine uses less fuel. Make sure your carburetor and ignition timing are correctly adjusted if your model is affected.
For newer vehicles with electronic fuel injection, make sure you don't have an engine warning light, as these are the sensors that automatically adjust the operation of your powertrain. For example, a faulty mass airflow sensor (used to measure the airflow entering your engine) can lead to increased fuel consumption.
16. Manage your speed . Use cruise control whenever possible to manage your speed and save fuel.
17. Fill up your tank near the French border if you live close to it. Due to different tax rates, you can save a lot of money by crossing into another country, such as Luxembourg or Spain.
18. Choose the best route . The shortest path isn't always the most fuel-efficient. Use the route with the fewest stop signs and traffic lights. Avoid going through the city or on roads that are regularly congested.
19. Download an app that tells you about gas stations near your location . Using an app can really help you save money at the pump – sometimes more than €0.20 per liter.
20. Consider buying a fuel-efficient car . Even several affordable non-hybrid car models can achieve 40 miles per gallon.
21. Convert your vehicle to ethanol . Some vehicle models can run on ethanol, a fuel that is much cheaper than gasoline due to lower taxes. However, be aware that not all vehicles are compatible with this fuel. Check with your manufacturer about your car's FlexFuel capability. We cannot be held responsible for any damage that may occur to your vehicle.
