Introduction
The BMW 2 Series F22 is a premium coupe that combines driving pleasure, powerful engines, and a sporty design. Its rear-wheel-drive architecture makes it a popular choice for those who enjoy dynamic driving. However, not all models are equal in terms of reliability. This guide will help you identify the most robust versions and those to avoid.

BMW 218i, 220i, 228i pre-facelift (4-cylinder N13 and N20 engines)
The N13 engine is a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine with direct injection, while the N20 is its 2-liter derivative. Both feature an aluminum engine block and variable valve timing. These engines are also used in some Mini Cooper models under the names N18 and N14 (an older version).
The 114i, 116i, and 118i versions of the F20 1 Series use a detuned variant of the 120i engine. With a simple remap, power can reach over 200 horsepower, making it an attractive option for performance enthusiasts on a budget.
Reliability and common problems
Unfortunately, the N13 and N20 engines have many common reliability problems :
- Timing chain : The timing chain is known to stretch; the guides are made of plastic and can break. We recommend paying close attention to any unusual engine noises, especially at idle.
- Turbo : Turbo intake pipes and vacuum lines can crack, causing power loss and misfires.
- Excessive oil consumption . This can appear before 150,000 km, or even before 100,000 km. Here are the main causes:
-
Faulty PCV (oil vapor recirculation): The simplest and cheapest cause is a faulty PCV. Either the diaphragm alone or the entire valve cover needs to be replaced.
-
Worn valve stem seals: Worn valve stem seals can also lead to oil consumption. This is easy to check: you will see blue smoke coming from the exhaust when you accelerate after idling for a while.
-
Oil leak at the rocker cover gasket: As with many BMWs, the N13 and N20 engines are prone to oil leaks from the rocker cover. Easy to detect, simply remove the engine cover (taking care not to damage the vacuum hose attached to it) and inspect the top of the engine.
-
Relaxed distribution chain
-
In the worst-case scenario, excessive oil consumption is linked to wear on the piston rings and cylinders of the engine block. In this case, the only option is engine block replacement or a complete overhaul.
Coolant leaks can also occur at the rear of the engine block. Therefore, be sure to inspect for any signs of fluid leaks around and behind the engine.
- Engine fouling : These BMW engines benefit from direct injection, so it's quite common for the intake to become clogged with carbon deposits when used in the city. To prevent this, it's advisable to regularly drive on open roads that put a lot of strain on the engine.

Improved reliability with the facelift: B38 and B48 engines
With the 2015 facelift, BMW introduced new, more reliable engines:
- BMW 218i (B38 engine, 1.5L, 3-cylinder turbo) :
- More reliable than the N13, but there are some cases of premature wear of the timing chain.
- Thermostats sometimes defective, requiring replacement.
- BMW 220i, 230i (B48 engine, 2.0L, 4-cylinder turbo) :
- Notable improvements in reliability compared to the N20, with better distribution management.
- Less oil consumption and fewer sealing problems.
Beware of coolant leaks :
- Via the upper engine hose.
- Via the oil filter plate.

BMW M235i and M240i: Reliability of the 6-cylinder engines
- M235i (N55 engine, 3.0L turbo, inline 6-cylinder) :
Good overall reliability, but a few points to be aware of:
- High-pressure pump prone to failure.
- Intake system fouling over time.
- Robust turbo, but wastegate sometimes noisy.
- M240i (B58 engine, 3.0L turbo, inline 6-cylinder) :
- Very reliable and efficient, often nicknamed "the German 2JZ" for its robustness and tuning potential.
- Fewer fouling problems than the N55.
- Improved turbo and direct injection reliability.

Regarding the sportier M235i and M240i models, these are more prone to abuse by their previous owners than to inherent reliability issues. Inspect the tire wear: look for signs of overheating, worn front tires on the sides (indicating fast cornering), heavily worn rear tires (skids), blue brake discs (heavy braking), and check the seller's claims (respecting turbo warm-up and cool-down times).

BMW 218d, 220d, 225d: N47 and B47 diesel engines
- N47 engine (pre-facelift, 2.0L diesel, 4 cylinders) :
- The timing chain is a point of concern , especially before 2015. Be alert for any suspicious engine noises.
- High risk of EGR valve and particulate filter fouling.
- Turbo sometimes subject to premature wear.
- B47 engine (post-2015, 2.0L diesel, 4 cylinders) :
- Significantly improved reliability, although distribution remains a point to monitor.
- Fewer injection and turbo problems than the N47.
- Controlled fuel consumption and improved performance.

Which models should you choose and which should you avoid?
- Models to avoid :
- BMW 218i, 220i, 228i from 2014 to 2015 (N13 and N20 engines).
- BMW 218d, 220d before 2015 (N47 engine).
- Recommended models :
- BMW 218i, 220i, 230i (post-2015, B38 and B48 engines).
- BMW 218d, 220d, 225d (post-2015, B47 engine).
- BMW M235i and M240i (with a slight preference for the B58).

Conclusion
If you are looking for a reliable used BMW 2 Series F22 , consider the facelifted versions from 2015 onwards. The B38, B48 and B58 engines offer better reliability and easier maintenance than the older N13 and N20 engines.
Always prioritize a complete service history and change the oil every 10,000 km for gasoline engines and 15,000 km for diesel engines to maximize their lifespan. For sports models, carefully inspect the condition of the tires, brakes, and engine components to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
