The different versions of the BMW M2

BMW M2 (F87) – 2016-2018

The first generation of the M2 (code F87 ) was unveiled in 2016 as the most compact and affordable model in the M range.

Engine & Performance

- Engine : 3.0L N55 turbocharged inline 6-cylinder

- Power : 370 hp and 465 Nm of torque (500 Nm with overboost)

- Gearbox :

- 6-speed manual

- 7-speed DCT automatic transmission (dual clutch)

- 0 to 100 km/h : 4.5 sec (BVM) / 4.3 sec (DCT)

- Top speed : 250 km/h (270 km/h with the M Driver's Package)

This first M2 incorporated several elements from the M3/M4 F80 , notably the running gear , brakes , and a reworked suspension . Its handling was playful and communicative, with near-perfect weight distribution.

Design and Features

- Aggressive look with widened wings and specific M grille

- 19-inch forged wheels

- Quad exhaust typical of M models

- Interior with Dakota leather sport seats, carbon fiber inserts and M steering wheel

BMW M2 Competition (F87) – 2018-2021

Faced with growing competition, BMW launched the M2 Competition in 2018 , a more muscular and sharper version.

Engine & Performance

- Engine : 6-cylinder in-line S55 (derived from the M3/M4)

- Power : 410 hp and 550 Nm of torque

- 0 to 100 km/h : 4.4 sec (BVM) / 4.2 sec (DCT)

- Top speed : 250 km/h (280 km/h with the M Driver's Package)

Adopting the S55 engine from the M3/M4 resulted in a significant power increase , but also improved thermal management , thanks to enhanced cooling.

Improvements compared to the standard M2

- Improved brakes ( 400 mm front discs)

- Reinforced steering and chassis

- Active exhaust with adjustable valves

- Sharper suspension , offering greater precision

The driving experience was more precise and efficient, but some criticized it for a loss of fun compared to the standard M2, due to its more serious chassis and less expressive engine sound.

Design and Features

- Black grille and new, larger air intakes

- New, more sculpted M Sport seats

- Added M Mode button to adjust steering and motor responsiveness

BMW M2 CS (F87) – 2020-2021

The M2 CS is the ultimate version of the F87 generation, a limited edition that pushes performance even further.

Engine & Performance

- Engine : 6-cylinder in-line S55

- Power : 450 hp and 550 Nm

- 0 to 100 km/h : 4.0 sec (BVM) / 3.8 sec (DCT)

- Maximum speed : 280 km/h

The M2 CS is a true Clubsport version , designed for the track and pure performance .

Exclusive items

- Carbon fiber hood, roof and spoiler to lighten the car

- Adaptive M suspension (a first on an M2)

- Alcantara bucket seats inspired by the M4 CS

- Optional carbon-ceramic brakes

Thanks to these modifications, the M2 CS offers a sharper and more dynamic feel, while retaining the playful character of the original M2.

Engine and Reliability

Oil leaks

- Problem : The cylinder head cover and oil filter gaskets are prone to leaks on N55 and S55 engines.

- Consequences : A gradual loss of oil can lead to excessive oil consumption and, in the long term, damage the engine.

- Solutions : Regularly check the oil level and inspect the engine for any leaks. Replacing the seals costs approximately €500-€1000 depending on the garage.

Crank Hub (M2 Competition - S55 Engine)

- Problem : On the M2 Competition and M2 CS versions, the S55 engine suffers from a defective crank hub . This can become misaligned , leading to a loss of valve timing and a risk of engine failure .

- Symptoms : Engine misfires, sudden loss of power, engine warning light illuminated.

- Solutions : Install a reinforced fixing kit (cost: €1200-2500 , labor included).

HPFP (High-Pressure Fuel Pump)

- Problem : This pump is essential for fuel injection. Some units can fail, particularly on N55 engines.

- Symptoms : Irregular acceleration, loss of power, engine sputtering, engine warning light.

- Solutions : Check the maintenance history. An HPFP pump costs €1000-2000 , installation included.

Excessive oil consumption (mainly S55)

- Problem : Some S55 engines consume more oil than normal, especially during sporty driving.

- Consequences : Risk of insufficient lubrication and premature engine wear.

- Solutions : Regularly check the level and use a quality oil that meets BMW recommendations.

Fragile cooling system

- Problem : Overheating due to failure of the water pump or thermostat .

- Consequences : Prolonged overheating can cause damage to the engine and cylinder head gasket.

- Solutions :

- Water pump replacement every 80,000 km (cost: €500-1000 ).

- Checking the cooling system (leaks, coolant in good condition).

Lighting and indicator problems

- Problem : Frequent malfunctions of the LED turn signals and headlights.

- Consequences : Malfunctioning traffic lights, non-compliance with technical inspection.

- Solutions : Replacement of LED bulbs or repair of the electrical wiring harness (cost varies depending on the origin of the problem).

Battery and electrical system

- Problem : The M2 has a complex electrical system that can cause electronic errors (ABS, ESP, Start&Stop warning lights malfunctioning).

- Solutions : A worn-out battery could be the cause of these bugs. Consider replacing it approximately every 5 years .
